The exhibition of one masterpiece from the collection of the State Hermitage
Ekaterinburg will host the Hermitage Days for the third time in mid-October. One of the highlights of the program will be the opening of an exhibition of one painting from the collection of the State Hermitage at the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts. Residents and guests of the city will meet with the work «Pampered child» by the outstanding French artist of the XVIII century — Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805).
Greuze is known primarily as an artist who has devoted all his creativity to the image of family scenes filled with moralizing content. He wrote these «moralizing» paintings according to the laws of academism, raising them to the rank of a historical genre, becoming a kind of historical painter of modern reality. Most of the family scenes in the work of the Greuze devoted to various aspects of upbringing — a topic that occupied one of the main places in the works Enlightenment’s personalities. «The word «upbringing» today on everyone's lips — wrote the French columnist — there was a discovery of childhood, this period of life for a long time was considered only a transitional stage to maturity, not deserving much attention».
«Pampered child» (early 1760's) just belongs to a series of «family» scenes of a Greuze. The picture was first presented by the author at the exhibition in the Salon in 1765 and caused a lively response of the public and the press. The sharpest minds of the time, including the philosopher, theorist of art and art critic Denis Diderot, did not ignore the plot of the picture and its artistic merits, and the abundance of details found a very different interpretation. The work as a whole is a clear illustration of the fruits of bad education.
After the salon in 1765, the «Pampered child» changed several owners — first in France, then in Russia. It is known that the «Spoiled child» was at the Chancellor of the lightest Prince A. A. Bezborodko in 1798. The painting received in the State Hermitage in 1923 from the collection of Princess I. I. Paskevich nationalized in Petrograd. In total, the collection of the State Hermitage contains ten paintings and more than a hundred drawings of the master.
The exhibition of one masterpiece «Pampered child» by Jean-Baptiste Greuze will be presented from 13 October to 16 December 2018 in Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts (Vojvodina street, 5).
